Music

Music is a very important part of the curriculum at Herries; each class, including Nursery, has a weekly music lesson in a specialist room equipped with keyboards and percussion instruments.

Singing is a key activity and all prep pupils join the choir, which participates in local festivals and competitions. All children from Year 3 upwards learn the descant recorder as part of the lesson and in Year 6 children are given the option of learning the treble as well.

In the Autumn term all children join in a celebration of Harvest Festival and Nursery and Pre Prep perform Christmas Nativity plays. Our annual Christmas carol concert and also the Easter service take place at St John the Baptist in Cookham Dean. In the summer term all efforts in Prep are concentrated on the musical theatre production; most recently these have featured an adaptation of Shakespeare’s 'The Tempest’, The Sound of Music, Annie and The Wizard of Oz.

Individual music lessons are available on several instruments including piano, guitar, drums, violin and voice. These are taught by visiting teachers in our music room and can be arranged on an individual or sometimes shared basis. Pupils can also participate in external examinations, the results of which are celebrated in assembly. In the Spring Term all children are involved in our Soirée where individual performances are encouraged and the choir takes part. Year 6 pupils also have the opportunity to join the Herries Rock band which performs in assemblies and the Soirée. The choir also takes part in the biannual schools choir event for Cookham Festival and every year we enter either Marlow or Maidenhead Music Festival.

We also visit outside venues in order to broaden the experiences of our children. Last year the music department arranged a music day where we attended a special children’s concert at the Barbican followed by two workshops, one on Balinese Gamelan instruments and one on Music Technology. In previous years we have also attended children’s concerts in Guildford and taken part in 'Young Voices' at the O2.
