Welcome from the Headteacher

Herries is a delightful, popular co-ed school in Berkshire for children from 2 to 11 years old. We are proud to be a small school, with a strong family ethos, outstanding pastoral care and excellent academic results. Herries was rated excellent in all areas by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) in 2022.

We have developed a thriving family community which enables pupils to thrive. Children, staff and parents all work collaboratively to help the children to achieve their full potential and develop life skills by following our Herrie Values:

Happiness
Enthusiasm
Respect
Resilience
Independence
Excellence
Sincerity

Manners, personal responsibility, tolerance and respect are nurtured at Herries. Our pupils thrive with the small class sizes which allow tailored teaching and more individual attention and learning time. By the time the children leave Herries to a variety of destination schools, including grammar, selective and non-selective independent schools, they are fully prepared for the next step in their educational journey.

Our ethos involved developing the whole child as a rounded individual by means of our broad educational provision. Character education and a wide ranging curriculum provide opportunities for the children to be involved in public speaking, drama, music, art, sport and numerous extra-curricular activities and clubs. In September 2024, we were shortlisted for the ISA Award for Outstanding Sport Provision in a small school.

Our distinctive setting in Cookham Dean is the former home of Kenneth Grahame, where 'The Wind in the Willows' was written. We are rooted in our local area, but we also attract pupils who have lived around the world, contributing to our strong community feel.

We offer a warm Herries welcome and look forward to meeting you.
